Sakura began with the thought, “red asian woman”…I had a vision of a female asian face painted completely red, adorned with the stunning Bighorn Sheep horns which I had been gifted. Early research led me to Aung San Suu Kyi, a woman who is both seductively beautiful and powerful and could justifiably wear these unique horns. Geisha imagery joined the sketching process as did the memory of a traditional Japanese song which I learned in childhood, “Sakura Sakura”, which depicts spring – the season of cherry blossoms.
Along this journey I shed the thought of a uniformly red image in favour of the light pink make-up of the Geisha – with red lips. As some have noted though, she would be very difficult, if not impossible, to kiss……..gb
