José Mujica

José Mujica…the former president of Uruguay has been described as “the world’s humblest president” due to his austere lifestyle and his donation of around 90 percent of his $12,000 monthly salary to charities that benefit the poor. Mujica was a Guerrilla Leader in the 60’s with the Tupamaros … an armed political group inspired by the Cuban Revolution. Following his capture in the 70’s he spent 13 years in prison in squalid conditions. Upon his release he joined the political process, ultimately becoming president of Uruguay from 2010 – 2015.
To me, Mujica seems like a Latin American Mandela…despite his suffering in prison he emerged benevolent, kind and compassionate…a true leader.
